hello all!
unless you have a lot of time on your hands, I suggest you go ahead and scroll down. that’s right, just keep scrolling…
k, so this blog post is more for my benefit, so I don’t forget the best night of my summer.
Company of Thieves (if you’re still reading this and don’t know who they are, you need to check them out NOW. seriously, they are so good it almost makes me cry) played an acoustic set/meet n greet in downtown Nashville’s FYE. if you’re in the Nashville area, they’re playing a show at 3rd and Lindsley’s downtown tomorrow. You can get more deets on their website (http://www.companyofthieves.net) - tix are $10.
anyway, back to my night. I drove down all by myself, and I’ve only had my license for 4 months, so I was nervous as hell to drive in a city like Nashville. Company of Thieve’s CD “Running from a Gamble” and my GPS got me there, though.
While I was waiting for them to set up, I browsed through the CDs and ended up buying an extra copy of “Running from a Gamble”, just because I love this band THAT much. anyway, so as I was browsing, Genevieve Schatz (the lead singer) just walks out of the back room just looking all gorgeous and stuff. I walk up to her and do this lame wave thing and was like “hii!” and she comes up to me and gives me the best hug ever. we started talking and I asked her what her favorite part of touring was, her favorite cities, and she asked me where I was from. I told her from Charlotte, and she said “no way! my grandparents used to live there - it’s so beautiful” and we continued talking for a bit.
a few months ago I posted an online video-blog reviewing their music to promote their newest album, and apparently they saw it, and they RECOGNIZED ME. a;dfjadk;sfjas;fkdjakvejakfefd. Genevieve was all like “oh my goodness, you’re so funny, you literally almost had me crying of tears - I love your videos so much! that’s why I hugged ya!” on the outside I was all smiles, and being all like “ohmygoodness, thank you so much! you guys make epic music, blahblahblah” but internally I was like that girl crying when Sonjaya sang on American Idol (does anyone remember that? good times). it was the best feeling ever. so, after a little bit, Gen said she needed to go set up and I continued browsing.
I’ll add a video later, but if you’ve ever sang music live you know how after a while it strains your voice, even when you’re singing correctly. k, well this band has been touring for a few weeks straight, and they did their set completely unplugged. Gen didn’t even have a microphone but she was belting and singing so freaking good, I was astonished. it was insane.
they did three songs - Modern Waste, Tallulah and Death of Communication. I recorded MW, but the other two are my absolute favorite.
it was a little awkward inside my mind because I wasn’t sure if we were supposed to sing a long or not. I chose not to, because Gen didn’t have a mic and I didn’t want to intrude the music with my voice, so I just danced there whilst looking weird (but hey, I’m used to that).
after they played the songs, they did a signing and we continued talking. Gen pointed me to the rest of the band and they were all like “oh my god, yeah! you’re really funny!”. I died. I could not stop smiling. I wouldn’t be surprised if I woke up tomorrow looking like Barbie. they signed my extra copy of RfaG, but instead of signing it they wrote really special things on it, like a year book. it was fantastic.
as the band was signing other things, I talked to the backing band. now, when I meet a person I always compliment them on something (sincerely of course), this one guy had a really cool name (it was pronounced A-tawn!!111!) and this other guy had really pretty eyes. I think they thought I was a freak, but eh, I’m used to that.
so I kept standing there chatting with other fans (and convinced a few people to buy their CD) and the band, and got a picture. then Gen asked if I was going to make the show tomorrow, and I said I wasn’t sure because I have to work - are you guys going to be selling merch?
Gen said that they were, but asked the merch guy/manager, Tony, if she could get some shirts out. so I followed them out to their van and they got out some shirts for me. I picked out “Won’t Go Quietly” and as I was about to pay for it, Gen was like “no, no don’t worry about it, your videos are really awesome” and I kept insisting because I really wanted to support them and she was just like “no, seriously, I’m not going to let you. your videos are great support”. I finally gave in, and Gen gave me another huge, amazing hug and I bid goodbye.
BEST. NIGHT. EVER. one of my favorite bands recognized me, told me I was hilarious, gave me hugs, and gave me a free t-shirt. adifjads;kfjadsf;akjas.
“nothing could ruin this night,” I thought as I was driving, then suddenly a cop car comes up behind me with its sirens wailing. looking at the speedometer, I saw that I was going 60mph in a 45mph zone. well, shit.
buuuut the cop car kept speeding by me, so I was good. I got you there, didn’t I? I drove all the way home singing at the top of my lungs, and viewed a magnificent sunset.
this was the best evening ever. I’m still smiling ant it happened 3hrs ago.

Company of Thieves - After Thought
Probably my favorite album of 2011 so far.
It amazes me that more people haven’t heard this band. Her voice is insane.
